SoTW: Death of a child
Ultraviolence, Death Of A Child would be high up list of tracks to add to the “I’ve been dumped” playlist and is great for listening too when you’re just feeling wretched. Had I had this song on my iPod a year and a day ago it would have been listening to it over and over. As it was I ended up listening to a lot of very loud, very aggressive music which I’ve kind of gone off a bit now due to overplaying and the connotations it has. Hopefully I won’t be feeling too wretched this weekend and who knows, with everything I have planned I might even have fun.
Where it hurts…
Where it hurts…
Where it hurts… [Well I wanted the stars to shine and I wanted you to love me]
Where it hurts… [Well I wanted the stars to shine and I wanted you to love me]
Where it hurts…
Where it hurts…
Incidently I ended up having to email the guy who wrote the song to find out what the lyrics actually said. His reply was:
Hi Dom
The lyric is “where it hurts” - it was originally sampled from the dodgy 70s movie “The Bitch” in which Joan Collins is talking with her accountant (I think) and he tells her she’s got no money and asks her where that hits her. I’ve always loved Joan Collins voice and in this case she says it with an air of regret that kind of transcends the kind of material she typically appeared in. The original sample was used for the track “Joan”, also from “Life of Destructor” and “Death of a Child” started life as using the same sound samples, including the voice sample. However, in the released version the sample was recreated using a voice actress (Carol Lythgoe) as Joan Collin’s management didn’t like the idea, although the film company (who’s name I forget) didn’t mind. To make the voice sound dirty like the original I recorded it onto VHS tape plus a couple of other things so it’s quite hard to make out what it’s saying in the end but hopefully the emotion comes over.
There’s also a lyric “well I wanted the stars to shine and I wanted you to love me” about half way through which is quite well buried in the mix - it’s just me “singing” into a microphone and then pitched up and distorted a bit, again to add atmosphere more then to be intelligible. Well, I really feel like I’ve ruined the whole song for you now but you did ask! Hope you found it helpful.
Cheers
Johnny
Personally I love finding out about this kind of stuff (I keep renting movies based on samples in songs I listen to).

That is really very interesting, I’ll youtube it when I get home.
I was listening to ‘Seal - kiss from a rose’ last night. Quite a nice powerful song.
Good luck finding it on youtube
