The outpourings of a deranged mind

Flower Watch

So, in conjunction with the critically acclaimed Shirt Watch I present to you: Flower Watch.

I have two tall vases on my dining room table which are pretty much permanently filled with cut flowers, (mainly bought from the supermarket as they cost less and last longer than the flower stalls I’ve tried), plus a small round vase that sometimes gets pressed into use. The vases add some structural height to that part of the room and a nice splash of colour.

For the last couple of weeks I’ve had one vase filled with some flowers bought from Liverpool Street station. They were supposed to fill both vases but I didn’t get enough. Since having a ‘lop sided’ table was driving me nuts I bought some tulips for the other vase. They have since passed their best :)

These have now been replaced with some roses and some…er…other flowers (I buy based on if they look nice, I really don’t care what they’re called :D ). My flower arranging leaves something to be desired but they look OK.

Of course, I would be walking home with these when I encountered my first ever swarm of bees. There I am, happily walking along listening to my iPod when all of a sudden I notice the sky is rather full of black shapes flying all round the place. Took my a while to realise what they were, however, before I could say “I’m covered in bees!” they’d flown off.

Might go for lilies again next time.

oo yes definately - at the risk of sounding like an over paid snob M&S roses are the bestest. You can sometimes get 12 for about £5. But they last about two weeks. The flower stall flowers are usually more expensive and last 3 days.

Currently I haev lillies in my dining room show piece table and yellow daffodils on my kitchen sink window thing :) I have also bought a tiny yellow rose plant which sits happily in my garden :)

I’m going to join in on flower watch.

oo a quick tip on flower arranging, take each stem and cut superflous bits off from abot half way down. Then cut the end off at a diagnal.

Fill the vase gently with water (to stop splashing - you don’t want water marks on your vase). Cut all flowers to the same length.

Begin placing one stem at a time into the water at a slight angle, over lap as you add more. You’ll soon have a beautifully filled flower vase :)

I think the first picture has too many flowers, they should also be cut shorter, the second I love. Very arty and strangly sexy, the others are very nice - but I would go for a single type of flower per vase - i think your flat would suit that mroe than lots of different flowers.

    Welcome to middle age. :(

Oh, I do the removing of excess leaves and stuff along with the cutting the stems at an angle. Sometimes I mix flowers, sometimes I don’t. Just depends on the mood I’m in and what’s nice in the supermarket. Unfortunately I don’t have an M&S near me so it’s Asda’s finest.
