Bah bloody humbug
Woe betide anyone who mentions the word Christmas in a public forum these days just in case we upset a Jew, or a Muslim or some other religion. Instead we have these pathetic euphemisms; ‘the holiday season’ and ‘the festive season’. I’m pretty sure that (with the exception of extremist fundamentalists who’ve all had a sense of humor bypass and should be shot on sight) your average non Christian isn’t going to be offended by mention of a pretty major religious holiday in what is, after all, a supposed to be a Christian country.
I have a theory, I think it’s not that we’re worried about upsetting other religions, I think it’s because of the crass commercialisation has meant that we’ve become embarrassed about the whole thing. Regardless, this political correctness gone mad doesn’t extend to everyone, there is one small group of people who are constantly hounded for their beliefs (or lack there of). I am talking, of course, about agnostics and atheists.
Being a proper agnostic [sorry Gran] rather than a ‘I can’t be bothered to work out what I believe so I’ll just say I am‘ agnostic I am offended by people insisting that I take part in Christmas. Christmas is a religious holiday celebrating the birth of the Christian messiah. It’s got absolutely sod all to do with all the commercialisation that comes with it now (Santa Claus, as we know him, is a construct of the Coca Cola coporation) and since I don’t subscribe to religion taking part in the celebrations would be a little hypocritical on my part and basically says I’m in it for the gifts.
So no, I’m not being a grinch or a miserable sod by not partaking. You wouldn’t dream of calling a Muslim miserable for not celebrating Christmas, so why make me celebrate it? I intend to enjoy my long weekend, do very little, play games and possibly visit a few friends. I don’t begrudge others celebrating, but try to remember what it is you’re celebrating.

I once worked for a Local Authority who declared one year they were no longer ‘Christmas Lights/decorations’ but ‘Winter Festival’ decorations…. #shrugs# just proves political correctness has just gone crazy
Hmmm - and which festival would this be?
Actually I think you should celebrate it, because it’s not really Christian at all, it’s really a pagan festival to celebrate midwinter which was highjacked by the early church. As someone who lives in the sticks and gets up before the lazy bloody sparrows in order to feed a menagerie I can tell you that midwinter is a great milestone to reach because it means that fairly soon I’ll be able to see the animals, and then spring and summer will soon be along. That said, I hate sodding Christmas with a passion. Bah Humbug indeed.
Yes, quit trying to share the misery
Besides, I pay you an absolute fortune in eggs to look after some of the animals
But you’ll be upset if there are no presents …..
Not really - if I get pressies it means I need to buy them. If everyone stopped bothering with it then it would a) be less expensive all round, b) remove the whole “you’re so hard to buy for” problem, c) cease the problem of getting stuff you don’t want and d) save me from having to buy everyone stuff because I feel guilty that they’ve got me stuff.
Jas an I have the perfect system. We buy the gifts for ourselves and tell the other what it is they ‘bought’ us. Course, he gets the bum end of the deal, “I’m” far less generous than “he” is.
All gifts recieved in this midwinter solstice period are being reclassified as house warming gifts
