Cromer: The storm
OK, while watching top gear and trying to get the idea of Jeremy cupping captain slow’s testicles out of my head I thought I’d post the pictures from Cromer after the storm surge thingy.
So, Cromer; famous seaside town with a nice beach, a pier and (soon) it’s own world class specialist zoo built and run by a world renowned zoologist. All in all it’s a nice little seaside town.
So first off we headed off east (left in the above picture). First off there is the Henry Blogg museum which had been sand bagged to protect it.
It hadn’t quite worked as there were signs of water damage inside. Still if you looked further along at some of the beach houses there were signs of worse damage.
The promenade didn’t fare quite so well. The stones had been taken up off the edge of it:
It’s surprising the damage wasn’t a little worse when you consider how big those bricks are:
We then decided to head west and see what it was like there. The promenade had faired even worse (bearing in mind this is on top of a 10 foot sea wall and then on the land side of the promenade:
You can’t see it too well on the picture but the water went another 10 or 20ft up the bank. A bit further along signs of proper damage were seen:
But this was just a taster of what was to come. The railings (which are sodding great bits of iron) took a beating:
Wood didn’t stand a chance. For a moment we thought we’d found all there was to find of hut 91, but we think we found it a bit later:
But the really scary stuff was down the beach a bit further. The sea had destroyed walls, ripped doors off and emptied the brick huts:
So there you go: the awesome power of the sea. I understand the pier also had quite bad damage from where the sea had knocked some of the floorboards out (and they’re serious bits of wood). No pictures of that unfortunately (the pier was, unsurprisingly, closed). I only wish I was there on the day with my big camera.

Hi Dom
I just wanted to say thank you for taking all those pics of the damage after November’s storm. I’m trying to write a fictional short story around that day, and my inspiration for the story happened on a day when I didn’t have my camera in the car, so although I went down to the beach, I looked, but got no shots. Yours are brill and very helpful reference. Thanks.
Claire
PS Found you through googling Cromer November 2007. Your blog looks pretty entertaining, will try to find time to read it – if I ever get this damned story finished.
